Background of the Study
Political communication in Nigeria is marked by rapid shifts in language use, where semantic variability plays a crucial role in shaping public debate. This study evaluates semantic variability—the differences in meaning conveyed by similar words or phrases—in Nigerian political debates. By comparing debate transcripts from various political forums, the research aims to document how semantic shifts occur, often in response to contextual, cultural, and rhetorical factors (Ibrahim, 2023). Political debaters may intentionally manipulate language to reframe issues, appeal to different audience segments, or obscure controversial positions. This study examines the lexical choices, metaphors, and contextual cues that result in varying interpretations of political messages. Understanding these semantic variations is essential for evaluating the clarity and effectiveness of political communication. Furthermore, the research seeks to determine the impact of semantic variability on voter perception and political persuasion, providing insights into the dynamic relationship between language and power in Nigerian politics (Ibrahim, 2023; Olatunde, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Although semantic variability is a key feature of political discourse, there is limited research analyzing its impact on Nigerian political communication. Existing studies have largely overlooked how shifts in word meanings during debates can alter public understanding and influence voter behavior. This gap restricts efforts to develop strategies for more consistent and transparent political messaging. Without a systematic analysis of semantic variability in debate transcripts, the nuances of political persuasion remain poorly understood. This study addresses this gap by comparing semantic patterns across different debate contexts to assess their impact on clarity and persuasion (Ibrahim, 2023; Olatunde, 2024).
Objectives of the Study
To analyze semantic variability in Nigerian debate transcripts.
To compare semantic patterns across different political debates.
To evaluate the effect of semantic shifts on voter perception.
Research Questions
What are the predominant semantic variations in political debates?
How do these variations differ among debate contexts?
How do semantic shifts influence political persuasion?
Significance of the Study
This study deepens our understanding of language in politics by examining semantic variability in debate transcripts. The findings will aid political strategists, communication experts, and linguists in designing clearer and more persuasive political messages (Ibrahim, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to comparing debate transcripts in Nigerian political communication and does not extend to other political media.
